Our Whole Lives Retreat

Our Whole Lives Retreat October 18, 2018 9 am to 9 pm Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. With a holistic approach, Our Whole Lives provides accurate, developmentally appropriate information about a range of topics, including relationships, self-esteem, online behavior,  sexual health, and cultural influences on sexuality. Facilitated by trainer Nathan Roberts. Retreat includes lunch and dinner along with an evening trip to Urban Air Adventure Park in Coon Rapids. New Year’s Eve Party

Families, kids, seniors, youth – everyone! We will have a games & potluck fun event at church to ring in the new year. Bring your favorite game and dish to share. We will have snacks, fun games and a movie provided by the church, along with balloon drops at 9 pm and Midnight. Bounce House ~~ Open Gym ~~ Movie ~~ Snacks ~~ Fun! RSVP to this event! Youth 6th grade and older may attend on their own. Kids must be accompanied by parent.

Women’s Self Defense Class

Women, defend yourselves against the Dark Side! On Saturday May 4th, we will host Sergeant Matthew Olson from the Minneapolis Police Department for a training on basic self-defense. We will gather at 9 and be done before noon. We will accept free will donations to cover the cost of refreshments, otherwise the event is free. Please sign up with Pastor Jill. Compassion Sunday

On Sunday May 5 we will celebrate the children we serve around the world in Jesus’ name. Many of us in this congregation already sponsor children through Compassion International, one of the highest rated charities in our country. Stop by our table to talk to sponsors and to hear stories about the children they sponsor. To sponsor a child online, go to Compassion.com. Compost Distribution

Are your gardens hungry? Would you like to feed them some pure, healthy compost? We have what you are looking for! On Sunday May 5, First Lutheran will host a compost distribution event celebrating our commitment to organics recycling and the health of our community. Please look for us in the church parking lot between 11:30 and 1:30. Come and get as many bags as you like. We will be collecting a freewill donation to cover the cost of bringing the compost in. Invite your neighbors! If you are possibly able to help bag the compost, join our compost bagging party on Wednesday May 1 at 6:30. Bring a shovel or wheelbarrow if you have it. Let’s get dirty for the love of God!

To Mars and Beyond VBS

Vacation Bible School for the whole family! Join us for an all-ages experience. Mon., June 17th – Fri., June 21st, 2019 5:00 pm Dinner 5:45-7:45 pm Program Blast off with the first VBS to land on Mars! To Mars and Beyond will help kids and families discover the wonders of God’s universe. Together, parents and kids will become Voyagers on a journey through space, exploring where God’s power can take them. Beginning in at First Lutheran Church Columbia Heights-an outpost on Mars-we will lift off to distant planets on special missions to collect power sources. Along the way, we will l learn how God walked with heroes of the Bible, and that God is always with us, too. Cost: $10/person, scholarships available. 7:45 pm Join us for a VBS after-party with a bonfire and s’mores in the courtyard at Church 8:45 pm Orientation to the Star Watch Class with Mike Lynch – open to the public! 9:15 pm Viewing of the Night Sky   Mike Lynch Starwatch -Join us for a Stargazing Class!   Mike Lynch, a broadcast meteorologist at WCCO Radio has been teaching astronomy classes since 1973. It’s a great introduction to the world of stargazing and you will learn a lot! Mike’s easy-going manner and sense of humor also makes the class a lot of fun. At Mike’s astronomy and stargazing class there is a half an hour indoor orientation of the night sky with maps and constellation diagrams provided, and then you will go outside and take in the beautiful celestial show going on over your head. You’ll take a constellation tour and share some of the lore of Big Bear, Little Bear, Cassiopeia, and many more. You’ll also use large telescopes to take a closer view of the beauty in the night sky. Your universe is waiting!
